Rowing Island

The Rowing Island copies Podolské Embankment on the right bank, opposite to the Imperial Meadow. It is connected to the right bank of the Vltava River by a concrete bridge. There is a collecting device for collecting water into nearby Podolí Waterworks.

The historical sources say that the island occurs as early as in 1420. It was created primarily by the silting of sand during the occasionally barring of the stream by ice at the constriction at the Yellow Spa. It is interesting that in the past the island was artificially extended by sinking a cargo ship in order to hasten the accumulation of river sediments.

The Schwarzenberg family have set up a small harbor for rafts and a warehouse for wood harvested in Šumava. After the importance of rafting had fallen back, the island gradually became a sports harbor, from which its name also derives.

Today there are mainly clubhouses, shipyards and other water sports facilities of the Vltava River sailing, canoeing and rowing.
